Red Shift: Interplanetary Do-Gooder

Writer/director Rob Noyes' vision of the World of Tomorrow. Not the bleak, post-nuclear wasteland or industrial urban dystopia of 1980s science-fiction, but the clean, modernist utopia imagined by the 1939 World's Fair: a future which, through industry and hard work, promised to be streamlined, prosperous and bright; and beyond it lay the Cosmos, just waiting for exploration and colonization. Red Shift and Lumpy lived in just this kind of Universe, and Dr. Alberts and Penny Parker were keen to travel there. It turned out, however, to be just slightly off-center from what they were expecting.

“And there shall be destruction and darkness come over creation,

Nine years after the first atomic bomb was detonated near Alamogordo, New Mexico, a mute little girl found wandering the desert heralds a series of mysterious disappearances. Local authorities are stumped until an eccentric scientist from Washington arrives with his daughter to aid in the investigation. But what they uncover is so fantastic and so horrendous that news of their discovery could cause a nationwide panic!
Adapted by PMRP Artistic Director Neil Marsh from the classic 1954 big-bug film by Ted Sherdeman, Russell Hughes & George Worthing Yates (story).

Ring In the New Year
with a Little Chaos!

THE POST-MERIDIAN RADIO PLAYERS have been invited to perform as part of Boston's expansive First Night festivities: a city-wide extravaganza celebrating the arts and featuring over 200 local groups performing in 40 venues. Come see radio drama performed the way it was back in the 1930's, 40's & 50's. Actors at microphones, live sound effects artists, and recorded audio effects will transport the audience from the cockpit of a heroic Do-Gooder's futuristic spaceship to the panic-stricken streets of a city doomed by science gone wrong!

Featuring

PRESHOW: Interactive Foley Demonstration — Starting at 6:45pm, members of PMRP's "Foley" (live sound effects) crew will lead a hands-ondemonstration in the Lobby, where you make the sounds for a comic retelling of The Three Little Pigs. For children ages 6 to 106.
ACT 1: Red Shift: Interplanetary Do-Gooder in “Countdown to Chaos!” — The PMRP bring to the stage their acclaimed original sci-fi comedy adventure program. This sendup of the pulp sci-fi serials of the 1930s and 40s features Red Shift, a licensed Do-Gooder for hire, and his faithful friend and mechanic Lumpy. In “Countdown to Chaos!”, the villainous Lord Draith forces the duo to crash-land on the forbidden planet of Earth. Their ship attracts the attention of the world-renowned scientist Dr. Alberts and snoopy Penny Parker, Girl Reporter, who find themselves trapped inside the rocket when calamity comes to call. Can Red and Lumpy escape from the primitive planet, or will human technology be their doom? Are Penny and Doc destined for a sudden trip into outer space, or will they get the chance to pack first? The amazing adventures begin here!
ACT 2: Arch Oboler's “Chicken Heart” — The infamous “lost” episode of the seminal horror series , originally broadcast in 1937, and immortalized decades later by Bill Cosby in one of his most famous routines. In the play, a research scientist and a science reporter for a big city newspaper are witness to inconceivable events when a laboratory accident causes a specially-treated chicken's heart to grow uncontrollably. While officials treat the scientist's demands for action with skepticism and delay, hapless citizens are consumed by the ever-expanding mass and the deadly heart continues to grow... and grow... and grow...

It’s time for Red Shift!
The stalwart defender of truth, justice and obscure pop culture references...

From the Creator

Red Shift was inspired by the pulp science-fiction radio and film serials of the 1930s and 40s, with a dash of 1950s television thrown in to taste. Admittedly, this is a well-farmed field, but rightfully so: the iconic characters, settings and technological gee-whiz from over 60 years ago can still captivate our imaginations and tug at long-forgotten childhood memories. Who doesn’t remember thrilling to the serialized adventures of Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers or Commando Cody? Well, me for one. I grew up in the 1980s. And that’s why I wrote Red Shift.

See, a lot of science-fiction in the Cold War 80s pictured the future as a bleak, post-nuclear wasteland or industrial urban dystopia. Some of it’s great when you’re older but to a kid who’s looking forward to the future, it seemed pretty grim. So I turned to visions of the future from other eras, from Verne and Wells to Asimov and Clarke, and then I found the clean, modernist utopia as imagined by the 1939 World’s Fair.

The Fair was held at a time when America, out from under the Great Depression and at peace for the time being, was really eager to look ahead. The fair presented a vision of a future which, through industry and hard work, promised to be streamlined, prosperous and bright. And beyond this World of Tomorrow lay the cosmos, just waiting for us to explore and colonize. Red Shift and Lumpy live in just this kind of future, and Dr. Alberts and Penny Parker are keen to travel there. It’s just slightly, well, off-center.

This future has been realized with the help of amazingly talented people, some of whom stepped up at the last minute to lend a hand. Together, we have created a little universe where technology is shiny, ray guns make excellent zapping sounds, and cliffhangers are improbably resolved in the next thrilling installment. Thanks for stopping by today to share in the fantastic future of Red Shift. I hope it entertains you (and if you’re hungry, I hear it goes very well with a big bowl of Cosmo-Flakes.)
