A nationwide re-telling of the classic American tale

About the Project

In 2011 PMRP spearheaded a nationwide campaign to spread the joy of terrifying radio drama to all the corners of America!

That Halloween, several radio drama troupes presented live performances of Washington Irving's classic American horror tale, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". Each troupe adapted their own version of the story: from its original late 18th century setting to the modern day.

Organizations that have signed on so far include:

The Atlanta Radio Theatre Company (Atlanta, GA)
The Ancient Radio Players (Ada, OK)
Seattle Radio Theatre (Seattle, WA)

For our part, PMRP is thrilled to have acquired the talents of Canadian playwright Roy Sallows (former story editor and writer for the Friday's Curse TV series—known as Friday the 13th: The Series in the US—and author of 2010's Big Broadcast of 1946 feature, "But Oh, What Happened to Hutchings!"), who turned out a truly delightful script set in the original tale's locale of Tarrytown, NY in 1790. PMRP's version wias performed as the feature episode of Tomes of Terror, part of The Big Broadcast of 1954.

Recordings of all the groups' performances have been compiled into a CD and made available to the public. You can purchase the collection here

Backstory

In 1949, the ten-storey Putnam-Moore Department Store—in what is now Downtown Crossing—closed its doors and radio station WPM moved its operations to the old vaudeville theater next door. But it was not the only move made that year.

On The Frank Cyrano Byfar Hour, Frank and Amelia moved into the Adams family home on Beacon Hill after Amelia's father, Ephraim J. Adams, left it to her in his will. With this move they also inherited the Adams' long-suffering butler, Chelmsford, along with an unusual assortment of neighbors and nuisances.

Domestic life soon proves to be more than a match for Amelia, while Frank finds that being rich has its advantages...some of the time.

A lost classic from Boston's radio history! Travel back to the Golden Age of Radio, to the WPM studios in the Rooftop Gardens Auditorium of the old Putnam-Moore Department Store in downtown Boston, and join Frank and the gang for some great music and lots of Halloween fun!

In this installment: It's Halloween and Frank is desperate to get Boris Karloff—visiting Boston in a performance of Arsenic and Old Lace—onto the show. With just a few hours left to air, Frank is in a panic and only a miracle will save the Rooftop Garden Players' climactic production!

The War of the Worlds: We all know about the horrific events which began on the night of October 30th, 1938. An invasion force from the planet Mars landed their rocket-cylinders around the world, starting in New Jersey. But what happened in Boston during the so-called “War of the Worlds?” Now, we are able to bring you the true story of the Martian Invasion of Boston, using news bulletins and field reports—as given by the actual announcers, historical figures and military personnel at the time—and dramatic recreations to depict the amazing story of how a North End mobster, an MIT scientist, and the Massachusetts National Guard allied themselves to carry out one final strike against the Martians and drive them from the city!

Adapted by license from Howard Koch's original documentary, written for Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre on the Air, and based on the historical accounts of H.G. Wells. “The Fall of Boston” research and script adaptation by Neil Marsh and Alicia E. Goranson.

Yes folks, this time around Frank Cyrano and the gang are learning the true meaning of the holidays in their own unique way.
